Look very closely at this card and you will notice 8/6/02 written in the top right hand corner. That date indicates when this lab mix was taken to the "shelter!" I took this photograph 8/2/08. Six years Scamp had been there wasting away in that awful place. One might ask, "Does the West Volusia Humane Society solicit adoptees? And does it do so aggressively? Or does it warehouse animals and if so for what purpose?"
I documented 30 dogs at the shelter that day which had been there at least a year and up to 7 years!! 4 were undocumented. As for the cats, there were so many that documentation would have taken several hours and as it was I was not welcomed there and needed to hurry on with my adoption process!
Several weeks passed (which is amazing because if a shelter really wants to adopt out pets it moves the process along) and finally someone called to say she was coming to inspect my home. Judy Gillette and Karen Clark arrived with adoption application in hand! And what do you know? I had requested Casper the Bishon and a lab mix. BUT my application form had been changed and in the top right hand corner was written in another hand, 2 PIT BULLS. "So I see you want two pit bulls," claimed Judy.
"Uh, no, I don't think they'd get along with my two dogs. Let me see that adoption form." I looked at it and told them someone had changed my application form. Of course they denied the claim but I told them I'd go back out and see the animals again to make sure I had the ones I wanted. I also asked for a copy of the application form but alas, they were unable to give it to me.
Back out to that dreaded place to lay claim, again, to Casper. I decided to rescue only one dog. How stupid. A YEAR LATER THE LAB MIX IS STILL THERE!!!! Casper was a disgusting mess physically. However, when Judy and Karen brought him to my house the following week he had been shaved, his skin infection finally treated. He ran around my house, jumped on my furniture as if to exclaim, "Thank you for releasing me from prison." That darling dog had been caged for 7 months.
I took him to my veterinarian who exclaimed, "His teeth are rotten! I have to pull most of them! Has he seen a vet?" I called the humane society and asked if he'd been under a doctor's care. "Of course," came the reply, "he was on medication for his skin." "then I want a copy of his medical records," I stated.
Several weeks later Judy called to say she wanted to come back to my house to take a photo of Casper and me. I told her she could do that as soon as his hair had grown back but in the meantime I wanted a copy of his medical records as they had told me he was seen by a veterinarian. I waited. No records were forthcoming. I emailed and requested the info again, something that I had every right to do. Judy emailed me that she wanted a photo and I told her you'll have the photo when I have the medical records.
Of the four of us filling out applications that day to adopt cats and dogs only one person got an animal - me. Yet the other women were wonderful caregivers and animal people. My take on that is they knew they'd better give me a dog or else. And probably they assumed that would shut me up.
Did I ever get the medical records? NO! Is that the way an animal shelter should operate? I'll let you decide as further revelations unfold......

I just have to answer this and perhaps Maggie Hall won't print this but Maggie I am onto you anf your personal vendetta to oust Gloria for your own gain.
You had all your friends fill out adoption forms to take possession of all the animals for your own gain.
I know what your plan is and that is to gain possession of these animals and then add them to your own organization and charge double to poor unsuspecting people wanting to adopt these same animals.
You will answer to the man above for your greed. There are a lot of people answering this blog who have no clue what your agenda is.
Anyone in their right mind would see, this is not greed, this is caring about animals left in the shelter year after year after year. The only greed here is hoarding animals on Glorida's part. AND my own vet told me how WVHS ran up a bill of over 6,000.00and WVHS refused to pay the bill,so he will no longer do anything for the WVHS, so no wonder the adoption fee is much lower, they have no money invested in the animals. How many other vets left hanging with a huge vet bill?? How much money was actually spent on the animals. I am sure that tax return mention will show that. I don't know Maggi, but I am glad someone has the nerve to stand up for these animals. Anyone thinking logically would see the writing on the wall with this discusting shelter. I have never entered a shelter that stunk so bad as the WVHS.
It seems Maggie will answer to the man above for saving animals. Boy have you missed the point. Let Maggie take all the animals, at least they will be properly cared for unlike the way you left that cat for over a month without no medical care. Can't be adopted as it was always sick. Just an excuse not to pay for medical treatment. At least Maggie spends the money to TREAT animals, so if having to charge more for adoption, at least the adopter is getting a HEALTHY animals, more then I can say for WVHS. They adopt out SICK animals and spend no money for care.
Maggi, post the tax returns and let us all SEE how much WVHS spend on the animals, please. That will say it all!
If anyone wants to see any charity that is 501c3, go to www.guidestar.org and tap in the name. You see, the IRS accepts reviewing tax records that are available at no cost to a person or business, on the world wide web as an acceptable source for the category "public viewing". Maggi knew this as myself and Judy mentioned it at a meeting at Friendly's restaurant with Gloria back a few months ago. (Maggi appears to be the type of person that if you are targeted by her on her many issues, you must have witnesses to confirm the conversation or just plain old record it.
Maggi was asked if she wanted to put it writing and I would notarize a sworn statement that she was content that she had all the "requested tax info" from the WVHS. Not necessary for Maggi, she was "happy at the moment". She was very satisfied and went about her way. The following week or so at a meeting in Deland, claimed that she still has not gotten requested items from any of the three shelters. This was told to City and County officials. WRONG WRONG WRONG.. SHAME ON MAGGI...
I have posted a few times anonymously. That comment about Maggi doing this out of greed has really angered me and from now on I will post my name. I am a life long resident of DeLand and an avid animal lover. I have had MANY bad experiences with WVHS long before I was Maggi Hall’s friend. I have personally tried several times over the years to adopt animals and always got the run around. “This one has a waiting list” , “that one is not ready” …. It goes on and on. Everything Maggi has posted is the absolute truth and I have witnessed it with my own eyes.
I was there when Maggi was taking these pictures and because of that I was “black listed” by the shelter. When I returned a few weeks later I was not permitted to go into the kennels and all I wanted to do was walk some dogs. They finally brought out this amazing little Corgi for me to walk while I waited outside. I called my dad and told him about this dog and asked him to fill out the application to adopt this great dog. I knew Gloria and her husband knew and respected my father and it was surely the best way to save this dog. When my father arrived everything changed. I never mentioned him prior to his arrival. After he got there everyone became so nice. Gloria came out to talk to me and she brought up Maggi and I simply said “All we want to do is save animals” It was unbelievable the change in attitude when they were put on the spot. My dad filled out the application and he was permitted to adopt that sweet dog and she now lives with my brother and his family and she is very happy. A great ending, thankfully, but a rare occurrence at that hell hole.
If anyone thinks that Maggi could ever profit from saving, vetting, and re-homing these animals is ignorant. These animals need so much care just to get them
healthy enough to adopt. Taking all of those animals out of there would be a huge, expensive, heart wrenching undertaking. What does Gloria have to lose by that? She gets the adoption fee. Isn’t that the ultimate goal of a reputable shelter? To find homes and make room for more needy animals? Correct me if I am wrong. Anyone who says that place isn’t nasty couldn’t have possibly ever been there. I recommend everyone should visit that place and see with their own eyes. If this blog forces them to clean the place up, GREAT! Now let’s see if she’ll part with the poor animals. So what if Maggi’s friends filled out applications. Maggi’s friends are animals lovers trying to save some lives. I don’t see anything wrong with that. I think there is something wrong with people who don’t see the problems out there and especially the people who support that woman.
Maggi Hall is a wonderful smart woman with a huge heart. Someone who is not afraid to stand up for the animals who can’t speak for themselves. Wake up people… visit that hell hole and maybe some changes will happen.

***"Save", should not be used in this case. They do not euthanize there. The SEVHS and Halifax HS does. Therefore if you adopt an animal on the "death list" from those places then you are actually saving the animal.

Quit trying to make people look senseless. You are the only one. You look very foolish, on many accounts.
Saving the animals does not necessarily mean from death, but can also mean from a life full of filth, embarrasment, pain, neglect and CRUELTY. That is what people do when they adopt an animal from WVHS. So saved should absolutely be used "in this case". Are you that narrow minded? Maybe thats why the animals are in such awful condition! Disgusting.
Who made Karen spokesperson for WVHS? Is Mrs. Thomas not able to type? Shouldn't she be the one doing the speaking for WVHS since she is the "Director"?
